Academic Tutorial on how to Write an Objective Essay

Writing an objective essay requires you to avoid including any of your own personal opinions. Students have difficulty writing objective essays instead of subjective essays because of the opinions they can and cannot use. When you write an objective essay, you will need to avoid using any types of words that show judgment or attitude and stick to just writing the facts.

  • No Opinions Needed in the Thesis
  • Like all essays, you will prove a thesis, but unlike other essays, your thesis needs to be completely objective. You cannot include an opinion in your thesis. You can write a hook in your introduction, but your hook should be factual and lead the reader toward your opinion with guiding adverbs. The bridge between the hook and thesis should also be factual, too.

  • Analyze the Facts
  • Your paragraphs should also include facts and a good analysis of those facts. The topic sentence should relate to the thesis and the facts should be cited to be completely objective. When you write the facts and provide an explanation, you should avoid using adverts that put the facts into a category or subjective expectation. Words like very or extremely are the type of adverbs that you should avoid using when you write a purely objective essay. You will not want to put any of your own personal opinions in those explanations.

  • Include Enough Paragraphs
  • Just like every other essay, you will want to write as many paragraphs as you need to complete the assignment. Each topic sentence will need to refer back to the thesis with facts that also support the topic sentence. Be sure to properly cite those facts in the style that you professor assigns. Even though you are avoiding including subjective sentences, you still can explain the facts so that your readers can get a good understanding of the facts.

  • Close with an Effective Conclusion
  • Your conclusion should begin with a restatement of the thesis statement. Do not just rewrite the thesis, but restate the main points of the thesis in new words. You should then be sure to restate the main points that help support your thesis, but again, be sure that you do not use qualifying descriptive words so that you can maintain the objectivity of the paper. Then, end with strong finishing sentence or two that will keep the read thinking about the topic.
