Essay Proofreading: The Key To Writing A Good Paper

Essays are one of the world’s ways to make students life a little difficult. Having to put together a cohesive paper that demonstrates a students understanding of a subject, it's annoying at best.  But one secret that many students aren't aware of is that  when it comes to essays, the key thing is proofreading.  Writing is one thing, but it’s the polish and primping is what makes the essay a sample of writing good. Taking the time to edit and to proofread really makes the paper go from good to great.  

Proofreading Tips:

• Read Aloud: When you read your essay out loud, then you can hear the mistakes and see the typos that may cloud the essay.  When a student reads the them their head, they can think what would be there rather than what is there.  


• Read Sentence Backwards: This awkward exercise helps find words and phrases that do not work in the essay.  It will show you how things need to go. This is a way of making the student slow down and think about the word they have put on the page.


• Peer evaluation: when the student has written the essay, and self edited it a good idea from them to have another person, normally a peer look over the essay to see if there are any mistakes or errors.  This is really helpful because it gives the essay a second set of eyes to find all the mistakes, that the student can miss because they are too close to the work.  


• Grammar Check: reading and examining the essay for grammatically incorrect sentences is important so that sentences read correctly and doesn't turn grandpa into a homicidal killer.  Commons not placed correctly can do that.  


• Letting It Cool:  This exercise makes the student walk away from the work in order to get it away from their mind for a bit.  Letting it cool means you just take a break from the essay.  

It's very important for the student to edit and proofread their work.  Because to turn something in that hasn't been read at all is like turning in uncooked food, pointless and gross. There has to be the editing or cooking process.  A student should never expected to be allowed to turn in an essay that's hadn't had some form of proofreading. The editing and proofreading process is a key part of any writing process.  Students must make sure that they take this step before turning in any essays.
